i’m not sure where to start regarding this movie. an intimate dance with the devil inside each one of us. it’s 7 hours and 19 minutes. a marathon. three marathons if you run really fast. from a photography perspective, every single scene is exquisitely composed. this is a black and white foreign movie that is subtitled. it would have never in a million years been made in the usa in the manner that it was. it is unlike any movie i have ever watched.
human debauchery, despair, and hope(?) are all themes that are explored. in painfully up close and personal scenes. it’s dark. and sometimes it’s much darker than others.
i went into the movie sight unseen and had no idea what to expect. this simply added to the natural tension that bela tarr so perfectly creates. i won’t spoil anything for you if you want to give it a go. i spread it out over 3 different sessions in two days.
if your library participates in kanopy and you have a library card, you can create an account and watch it. kanopy is paid for by libraries, so you are paying for it with tax dollars in some way.
if you watch it, come back and let me know your thoughts.
